Kettle meet Pot" the very same criticisms could be applied in the other direction. (Apparently mirrors nowadays actually have no reflection.) At the same time I think the author struggles to find a balance like most of us really. We will not agree on every point of contention but we fail to look and find the common ground most people will see as reasonable in today's social climate. Education is not a concrete term. Intelligence is also a debatable trait and virtue. Learning has a whole other level of context. It usually begins with a question. If everyone were only homeschooled we would likely be stone age forever. Collecting knowledge is magnified through cooperative and curious interaction with others outside our bubbles. Homeschooling in USA is regulated by each state btw. Always question authority! It holds it accountable. live long and prosper as best you can Jacque

Then, after a period of time, they "jump the shark" and lose their way. Education has become flat out nutty in recent times. All the way from elementary schools up through our universities. What's odd to me, is that there is always a significant contingent, that hops on board the crazy train. Attempting to add credibility to something not that long ago would have been seen as either ludicrous or certifiably nuts.

I think there are things in life, like the education" Valued Poster I know I've seen some very different methods and lessons in curriculum from my kids and grandkids. Much of it is just different strategy and emphasis in specific areas. Some of it is introducing new concepts that prepare them for more advanced things later. However Education departments are always state by state with federal funding in support and they set the mandates and curriculum. Fortunately my state is a bit more progressive than most in making education a priority for communities and their school districts. But it can differ greatly between school districts too. Magnet and Charter schools with open enrollment per city are very common where I live. My kids went to different high schools each for different reasons. live long and prosper as best you can Jacque

I know there are other states that prioritize education and progress. And not just with revisionist American history and non-banned approved literature. :sarcasm: For now I will remain somewhat aloof. I will give a hint. My state is a landlocked island of sorts. Many national and international companies were founded and/or reside there. And there is a professional sports team in all the major sports. Maybe I'll drop some hints again soon. I do not intend to keep it a secret forever but just for a while longer. I'm getting close to a place in my life where I won't need to be so guarded about personal details. I think there are things in life, like the education" They hate teacher’s unions, hate correction of outdated ‘historical’ lessons (the old Southern myth of ‘victimization,’ for instance), the removal of FORCED prayer from schools (voluntary prayer remains legal) and resistance to other attempts to smuggle religion back in. Plus the obvious fact that only ignorant people are easy to dupe, particularly in voting for a criminal like Trump. -greenman

Valued Poster My liberal daughter was even commenting today on the fact that so many of her students are not too good at a lot of things academically speaking. Many are not even all that good with the basics of being a strong and competent adult human being.

Valued Poster How do you teach a child that they have to believe in miracles or concepts that really make no sense, when you think about what many religions teach their believers that they MUST believe.... and then try to teach them how to think logically or critically?

Well, for one thing, kids are not allowed to have critical thinking skills....
