A sad day for primatology and lots of us Posted by greenman on October 1, 2025, 7:13 pm Valued Poster Jane Goodall has passed away at 91. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2025/oct/01/jane-goodall-world-renowned-primatologist-dies I remember her from reading Nat'l Geographic back in the '60s. No one knew more about chimpanzees. Everyone loved her, too. RESIST!

What an incredible naturalist was she! What we learned from her. People who thought chimps and primates were nothing like us had their world-view shaken when it was found that they ate meat, committed what we'd call murder, and fought small wars. Very discomfiting to see yourself in the mirror like that.. RESIST!

Valued Poster She discovered that humans weren't the only species that used tools... along with various other behaviors and emotions, and she learned those things by gaining their trust. I have watched and heard many stories of 'wild' animals coming to humans to help rescue one of their own. Recently I read a story of a little boy whose sled took him out onto the ice of a river whereupon he fell through and could not pull himself up and out to safety. A pack of wolves were watching him from the bank as he struggled and screamed for help. Then the wolves came out onto the ice and grabbed his clothing with their teeth and pulled him up onto the ice. Then he got up and walked back home... with a story to tell.
