People seem to often hijack words to use differently than their true meanings, you know - slang, so that's probably what transpired.

Beyond frigid. When I worked in the Yukon it was so cold that a steel beam on a backhoe snapped. (Between -70 and -80 F). We had to keep all vehicles idling 24 hours to keep the fuel from turning to jelly.

Accordingly they were excavating in the riverbed, which is not frozen, to pour cement for the piers and abutments. They were able to heat around the pour sites as well as around where the cement was being made. The outdoor workers were limited to 45 minutes outside and then 45 inside. They were working two 12 hour shifts so they were killing it with overtime pay. Needless to say they were well layered in clothing. I was lucky as I had an inside job as office manager, payroll, radio operator, purchaser etc.

We wore heatd boots, gloves, helmets, and faceshields, along with heated seats and handlebars on our snowmobiles in the White Mountains. Plus thick winter snowsuits under our thick snowmobile jackets. Mt. Washington is bitterly cold in winter here in New Hampshire, but nothing like the Yukon! How did you guys stay warm working in those temps??
