I replaced one of two window air conditioners, 10,000 BTU supposedly for four hundred square feet. My adobe building is nearly double the square feet, but I seem to be able to keep the building near 75F. Now I await my next electric bill to see how extra it will be. I rarely go outside for more than 40 minutes a day. There are some advantages to being mostly housebound. ChristopherBlackwell

I'm glad you're able to cool your place down so easily. Hopefully it won't "break the bank" in the process!

" Plus I had far worse electric bills in the 1980s, when we operated as a museum with seven eight foot long display cases each with four 150 watt floodlights that gave us bill between $200 to $300 a month electric bills, and that caused us to install 96 solar panels over a three-year period. Needless to say, I no longer have flood-lights and I now have low energy modern light bulbs. ChristopherBlackwell

Yup! Big, annual family cookout at my house tomorrow. it will be at least 95 if not hotter. I was Posted by Sia on July 3, 2026, 12:00 pm, in reply to "Yikes, worse than Ohio" glad for the expected T-storms and cooling rain, but the forecast now says no rain in sight. Delayed. Might show up Sunday or Monday. UGH! So I got the pool ready for a crowd and bought more fans so we can use some floor fans outside too to create a breeze where people are sitting, but it probably won't be enough. No AC, except in bedrooms, because it was never needed very often hereabouts and being such a large house with radiant heat, we'd have had to install another entire system just for central AC. Given how infrequently it was typically needed here, it wasnt worth adding $45K+ more to the cost of building the house when separate room air conditioners in the bedrooms could readily do the job effectively for about $1.5K instead! So, at this point, there's NO way to use single room ACs in rest of the house because of the open concept and inside balconies connecting each area. Only central air could keep it cool and we just didnt need it. Well, that is before huge shift in climate in N.E. occurred. Now I wish we had done it! Hindsight is 20/20!

Posted by Sia on July 3, 2026, 11:44 am, in reply to "Stay hydrated" ADMIN She and Evelyn were at their respective summer camps until I picked them up yesterday afternoon. Both were wicked overheated but at least Evelyn was able to go inside the rec center with the other kids where it was air conditioned to play dodgeball in the gym to keep cool in the afternoon heat. Alana was at the UNH summer camp for younger kids and was outside at the pool for much of the day. Even in the water it was WAY too hot for anyone. It was suffocating out there when I picked her up a couple hours early because I figured they'd be outside too much doing swimming lessons and free swims. Poor thing was way too hot already by then. She's better today. I kept them home to avoid it happening again. Fortunately for me, I was in my car with AC on for the hottest part of the day, driving 76 miles from my house to theirs (as I do every Thursday and staying for 3 days to take care of them). But lemme tell you, getting out of the car once I picked them both up, I was walloped by the outrageous, muggy heat bomb outside! It made me nauseous too!

Valued Poster I never had heat sickness, but my ex and our daughter are susceptible to it. We used to like S. Carolina a lot, but could never have lived there. Even I thought it was hot - and that was in Sept. or April or some 'cooler' month! Best to Alana. SAY ‘NO’ TO WAR! RESIST!

We were in S.C. once, in a nice resort (Seabrook I.) which was sprayed, kept clean, etc. My ex came into the living room once babbling about something in the kitchen, so I looked and there was a huge cockroach on the front of a cupboard. 'Wow, that's a big one!' I said or something, but she just urged me to get rid of it.. SAY ‘NO’ TO WAR! RESIST!

Right on the Homosassa ariver! Scary! They moved a little south and lost the alligator issues but gained the armadillo problems where they dug huge holes in the yard and gardens EVERY night! That's not even dealing with the heat! They wound up returning to their MA home every May and going back in late September because it was so unbearable outside all summer.
