Before the 60's...the land our home stands on was once an orchard. We have a tree in the back that is older than our home - and we have to have an arborist come this year as a sizeable limb came down in the last real storm. There is quite a bit of dead in it - makes me sad. The bill to have the tree 'trimmed' or whatever they do makes me even sadder. I hope they show up in August to do the deed - but there have been many destructive winds this year so most companies are 6-8 weeks out on their schedule.

Anyway - at the east end of my area is a beautiful shelter belt that has stood there since the days of the orchard. We have fought many battles to prevent developers from cutting down that area. I suspect that the battle will be lost one day and I hope I am gone when it is.
