I was in Montgomery Alabama for Hurricane Dennis - pretty much a non-event.

BUT, I departed Montgomery Alabama driving through Texas to Dallas about a week before Katrina hit. I was in the process of driving from Dallas, north, back to home when evacuations began. Interesting times.

...right after Katrina. They spent 16 hours on a drive that normally takes about 3 hours. The guy had the forethought to buy several extra cans of gasoline days before the evacuation or they would have been stranded along the way. They were turning off on side roads to "hide" while they poured gasoline into their vehicles. People were fighting over available gasoline and one TV crew was robbed of their cans of gasoline at gunpoint. It was definitely crazy.

I don't remember the storm but a bus caught fire with a load of seniors and several died. They said their oxygen bottles were exploding in the fire.

The evacuations are almost as dangerous as the storms.

While it's admirable, opening your home to strangers is not a wise move. Just my 2 cents.

...I saw him at meetings in Houston occasionally and we spoke on the phone many times. Though we were not friends and I did not know his family it seemed like the right thing to do.

His daughter was a pain but otherwise it was okay. She was at that "moping" stage where her life revolved around her friends and she hated our slow internet. She also hated sitting and watching our stale old TV shows.

Here's the one we had yesterday at my house a number of miles down the road.

...a sort of vetting through the local Baptists. It worked out well also.

So far, the canal has not topped the seawall. It's still about 2 feet below but we're under flash flood warnings. I don't think we've sustained any damage but I haven't been outside to look around. The power has flickered several times but has only been out completely once very briefly.

The predicted peak winds for us are supposed to occur in about an hour. The barometer is the lowest I've seen in a while at 29.60".
