I remember back home on the west coast of Scotland in the 80s being in a shop in Ayr and hearing Radio Nova from Dublin. At that time Nova was pumping out a nicely processed 50 kw on 738 kHz so the signal was good. Despite having the “choice” of the BBC and two ILRs and FM listening, they chose a Dublin pirate. Except they probably didn’t know where it was coming from, just that it played good music.
That’s an interesting observation Nick reference JY, I live on the North Kent Coast. Some may remember the Caroline Fun Bus? It might have been the summer of 78 the Fun Bus was parked near the Pier opposite Dreamland in Margate. Further up the road Radio One had the roadshow, the Caroline Fun Bus was blaring out music and rammed with listeners in their teens and 20’s. The local cafes or at least some played Radio Mi Amigo too. When the Caroline Roadshow played Dreamalnd the queues were enormous.
In my town the demographic was let’s say more mature and no doubt JY was enjoyed by the elder populous.
I don't listen to him or Radio 2 much at all (which some might say is grounds itself to comment). I am sure he is a fine presenter. I know too that the Radio 2 playlist contains some current and so more varied music than his next station. I wonder how many of his many listeners will move with him versus, frankly, don't know how/find it too tricky to find him and will instead grumble for a while then stick with what they hear.
I appreciate I may be being ageist/bigoted, based on the fact I have always associated R2 with chambermaids and the dentist.
In summer 78, when we were on hols in Kent, I was dumfounded how, with THREE pirates on (briefly), the place had JY on all over.
It seems Ken Bruce is to leave BBC R2 and join Greatest Hits Radio in April.
Pop Master is going with him.
After the earlier removal of the SWINTA program this will leave R2 nothing of any note to listen to during the day.
