Working in my Postvan in and around Woodbridge I must admit I've noticed zero difference to the TX strength, but I'm just a few miles from Orford Ness!
The "Dark Side" really does amuse me, they all have such knowledge off Caroline, yet say they don't listen!! Plus I love the ones who say they have "Information from a reliable source" yet never name such source. I'm surprised a young DJ from Gateshead has yet to criticise PMs latest update.
Happy New Year to all. And Happy 60th Birthday to the Lady.
Righto,
The keyboards are running hot at the other place where lack of any knowledge of the subject is no barrier to making comments. There are two threads, one broadly named as above and one about '648 on low power ' or some such. There have ben 130 responses so far.
As an aside, Garry Stevens reveals himself via his various errors of spelling when he is pretending to be someone else. I shan't correct him as this is how I recognise his postings.
To put the matter to bed here is a smattering of logic.
Establishing a music radio service on AM in the 2000's is certainly unusual. To justify going ahead required a variety of factors.
1. Support from MP's and quiet support from Ofcom.
2. A loyal audience prepared to and used to listening on AM,
3. The availabilty of a ready made high quality broadcast site.
4. The award of 1000 watts against a possible 70 watts.
5. A transmitter provided by Alan Beech on more or less permanent loan.
6. A donation from a well wisher that covered all of the year one running costs.
7. An award of an increase to 4000 watts, with solar power making this affordable when energy costs rose.
Now. 7. required another transmitter and it would not have been cost effective and nor could we afford a new one. The Harris DX25 was found in storage at the Dutch German border. Having been out of service since 2008 and offered at a very low price. Then we bounced it all across Europe to Essex. Under the instruction of Alan Beech, Steve Bradley and I did the physical part of converting it to 648. I won't cover just how Steve established a a three phase supply to my workshop.
We were terrified of the thing at first but soon became blase and had a grand time converting it. Alan and Martin Fisher did the clever stuff. Howard Beer bounced it from Essex to Suffolk and put it on a landing craft to reach the island.
I think the Harris started working at the end of 2019 and here we are at 2024. We just ran the thing unnattended for a long time before it had faults caused by age and our less than 100% experience of the machine.
Fortunately, Alan is working on other DX25's just now thus expanding his knowledge. When he is not earning his living and dealing wih family matters and when temperatures rise such that I can bear to work in a draughty concrete building we will go and fix it. We have obtained an audio processor which is seemingly the dogs boxxxcks of AM sound processing. In the meantime the Nautel is working well enough,
So, nothing to see here, move along.
PM.
