Yes, we know the salty sea, carries the signal "Ground wave" further - wet non salty soil, perhaps has a similar effect, but not as good as the sea.
I'm in the West (about 20 miles west of the M5) for Xmas, & about an hour before darkness, 648 was coming in here on the car radio, really well. I must be about 250 miles + from Orford here.
