Two things spring to mind - the BBC have been cross-promoting stations willy-nilly for far too long and it is grossly unfair, especially to small and single channel stations. Should be stopped - OFCO)M are the culprits, as the Beeb constantly push the boundaries.
Secondly, it was a true old-Caroliner, Tony Prince, who wrote a long article years ago in which he lambasted stations which have no team spirit and are simply a gaggle of personalities eager to boost their own identity. The Royal Ruler correctly urged that DJs should promote their own station above themselves, and went one further saying that anyone speaking disparagingly about the station (as most Radio One staff did at that time) should be fired on the spot if they were heard blasting the station.
That should still go for any station. Loyalty is a great virtue, such a pity so few BBC boys have much of it.
Nothing wrong with Caroline cross-promoting their (four?) channels. And some flippancy is fine - top marks Kevin Turner!
In the early days of Laser we had a promo every two hours, urging advertisers to contact their LOCAL ILR if they were a local business, but to call MMI in NY if they wanted international coverage. (Many responded, though the NY 'admen' were totally unable to close any sales)
