Two white union carpenters, JP Bouchillon and Stanley O'Rourke, armed with shotguns, accompanied Sol Dacus to the local Central Trades and Labor Hall where they sought refuge for him. Dacus was the head of the newly-formed black section of the International Union of Timber Workers in Bogalusa, Louisiana. Several attempts had been made on his life, including his home being riddled with bullets while his wife and children were present.
The courts issued a "disturbing the peace" arrest warrant for all three men and a posse of armed company men from the Great Southern Lumber Company assembled to confront them leading to a gunfight. Both Bouchillon and O'Rourke lost their lives and provided Sol Dacus the opportunity to escape.
