Yes, during the Chicago Freedom Movement led by MLK, He famously stated that he had never seen mobs as hostile and hate-filled as the ones he encountered in Chicago, even in the South. And here in Milwaukee, many called it the Birmingham of the North. You would not have believed the hatred that South Side Poles had toward African Americans. Thank God, when my dad moved us all to Milwaukee from Iowa, he chose the North side. But even there it was terribly segregated. At least, however, i got exposed to African Americans. The South side had none in their neighborhoods. terribly segregated.

If I remember correctly, Dr King once blasted the insidious kind of hate & racism he encountered in Chicago (up north?) compared to the South etc.
