Out with the old and end with the new. That's what socialist Mayor Zorhan Mamdani is trying to do with our misguided understanding of participatory democracy.

Up till now, voters vote and then get out of the way and let the professionals they elected run the show.

Enter Zorhan with a whole new dynamic. Throughout his campaign Mamdani told his followers, "I can't be successful without you."

Mamdani announced a new city initiative called Organize NYC, designed to bring a grassroots base into the guts of the governing process. “We want the voices of working class New Yorkers,” the mayor said, “to be the driving forces behind the decisions that shape their lives.”
