A South Carolina jury acquitted Chikei Rick Chow, an Asian convenience store owner, of murder in the 2023 shooting death of 14-year-old Black teen Cyrus Carmack-Belton(photo below). Chow shot the teen in the back after chasing him over 100 yards, alleging the teen had stolen four water bottles and pointed a gun at his son.

This recent incident parallels the historic 1991 fatal shooting of 15-year-old Black teen Latasha Harlins in Los Angeles by Soon Ja Du, an Asian store owner who suspected her of shoplifting a $1.79 bottle of orange juice.
