Haitian dude Jean Baptiste Point du Sable is widely recognized as the first permanent non-Indigenous settler and founder of Chicago. In the late 1770s or early 1780s, he built a large, prosperous trading post at the mouth of the Chicago River, establishing the foundation for the city.
