Presently, the regular delivery personnel deliver mail to every address in the US 6 days a week.

The size of this group of postal workers, operating costs and equipment could be cut in half by dividing each postal route into 2 separate routes, say “Route A” and “Route B”, and delivering mail to Route A addresses on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and Route B addresses on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Just to give the appearance of fairness to postal patrons, the routes could be flip-flopped each month.

This plan would work with half of the number of delivery personnel, trucks, gasoline, maintenance, insurance, etc. That is a huge savings. Also, cuts environmental pollution and toll from accidents in half.

Now naysayers would claim that there are persons or businesses that need daily service. There are already special USPS and other carrier delivery services to address special needs. There are also USPS PO Boxes that would be serviced daily.

Now, this proposed plan does not cut the entire cost of the USPS in half. The costs associated with the logistics of moving pre-delivery mail across the nation and internationally, and staff in manned postal stations would remain about the same.
