Harrison Tyler was named for William Henry Harrison, the 9th President, who died in office from pneumonia on April 4, 1841, exactly 1 month after being inaugurated. Vice-President Tyler ascended to the Presidency to fill Harrison's term, although the Constitution never codified the transition until the 25th Amendment which was ratified in 1967. Tyler, like Ford, was never elected. After he vetoed the Whig domestic legislative agenda, he was expelled from his own party on September 13, 1841, thus ending his chance for election in 1844. James K Polk was elected in 1844. A protégé of Andrew Jackson and a member of the Democratic Party which Jackson founded, Polk was an advocate of American expansionism and Jacksonian democracy. That was back when democrats, especially Tennessee democrats, were good for the nation. PS - Jackson married my 3rd-great aunt, Rachel, so he is my uncle. Our farm adjoins his property.
