...my mother started life in a sharecropper shack in the middle of the fields of North Central Texas near Denison. They had no electricity, no plumbing and used a wood stove for cooking and heat. The walls were wooden plank with no insulation. They lived in a shotgun house with two rooms. The youngest children slept in one room with the parents and the woodstove. The oldest all slept in the other room. There were 10 kids total.

They depended on kerosene lamps for light and a mule provided both transportation and power for the plow. At one time they lived only 15 or 20 miles from my great-grandmother. It took all day on a wagon to make the trip to see her and another day to get back. An old uncle bought an old used Model T Ford and the trip suddenly became only 45 minutes to an hour.

By the time my mom passed away at age 90 she had central air conditioning and heat, satellite TV, 2 baths, and many more of the conveniences of modern life. She woke up every day and thanked God for her beautiful mobile home.
