Transporters were something that came about due to money (supposedly). The studio powers-that-be said it was too costly to film a shuttle craft launching from the good ship Enterprise and then land on a planet every time the landing party (or anyone else for that matter) had to be transported to a planet's surface. I have no idea why they couldn't just skip showing the actual launching and landing of the shuttle craft and write the scene in such a way that it would be apparent that that is what happened. I mean - Kirk orders Spock to assemble a landing party and when we cut to the next scene, that landing party is on the planet's surface. Even out in space, 2 + 2 = 4. But whatever. . . .
The original show I had some problems with:
The bridge design on the original show - only one way off the bridge, the turbolift. If that thing malfunctioned or lost power. . .
The crew's lounge was very stark and barren looking - not even a potted plant here or there.
Every crew member had their own private quarters - just how big would that ship have to be to accommodate a crew of 400 plus with private quarters for everyone?
What, no bathrooms? Only in the crew's quarters? Ya mean when on the bridge one would have to dash back to one's quarters?
And those food replicators - seems they were in places one would not expect them to be, like the transporter room. Don't crew members go to the cafeteria to eat?
The women crew members' uniforms looked like a go-go dancer's get-up. . .mini skirt (kinda) and boots. All that was missing was a plunging neck line (which Deanna Troi of TNG made up for - I use to call her 'Counselor Cleavage').
I did enjoy the first three shows (TOS, TNG, DS9). Some really good writing - and some bad but all in all, enjoyable.
TOS - loved Shore Leave, Squire of Gothos, Naked Time - hated Spock's Brain.
TNG - loved The Measure of a Man, the Q episodes, . . . .in fact, too many good ones to mention.
