A capsule works well for re-entering Earth's atmosphere, but Mars' atmosphere is too thin for parachutes alone.

A capsule with parachutes, and airbags are one possibility to cushion the impact on landing.

Another possibility... bring back Rotary Rocket as a human-rated Mars lander.
