An extra fuel tank could be launched separately and attached while it is docked to the ISS. The latter would be essential IMO to unfold the mirrors & shield and get the telescope functioning. Almost all of the 300+ single points of failure should be eliminated before it departs the ISS.

NASA has a history of group-think, rationalizing the decision to launch amid obvious problems, leading to a doomed mission.
