I read the new 100 million pounds HMRC building in Cardiff, employs 4500 civil servants. A journalist trying to get a phone answered decided to visit the building and see how many civil servants are turning up for work. He said it was 976. Mostly dressed in jeans and tee shirts, tracky bottoms , denim shorts ( although cold):with Bermuda shirts. Does anyone remember when civil servants in London dressed in dark suits, bowler hats and rolled umbrellas. I can remember they were still dressing that way in the 1970’s. I can’t imagine going back to bowler hats, but I do think a better dress code is needed than what is now allowed.
