We've all heard of Hedley Schools on Argyle St which are still there today just yards from St Cuthbert's Church. I never realised that the Rev Hedley was just 36 yrs of age when he died. . He was also remebered when a street was named Hedley St. 1871 March 19th The foundation stone of St. Cuthberts Church Hebburn was laid this day amidst rejoicing of goodwill. 1879 November.l9th A new organ was opened today at St. Cuthberts Church Hebburn and has been built by Messrs Harrison's of Durham at a cost of £250 1881 April 8th This day the Prime Minister appointed the Rev. P.W. Clarke late curate of Hexham to the newly formed parish of St. Oswald. The new parish comprises the whole of Hebburn Colliery and with a population of 3,000 and is at present endowed with £200 per annum. The patronage is vested in the Crown and Bishop of Durham alternately. 1881 November 18th The foundation stone of St. Cuthberts Schools was laid this day by the Bishop of Durham Dr. Lightfoot at Hebburn in the presence of a large assembly of spectators. 1882 September 29th died at the vicarage-aged 36 years the Rev. William Hedley Vicar of Hebburn. The Deceased clergyman was highly esteemed by his parishioners. "In the midst of life we are in death" He took charge of the parish in the year 1875.
