I've spent a fair amount of time in the US, and they ARE big.
Chatting to a guy in Arizona (in the South-west) was going "Home for Christmas" in the North-East...it was a FOUR day drive !!!

On the other hand, friends from Texas visited me, when I lived in Nottinghamshire. Hired a car at Heathrow, & drove north, up the A1....

Were just short of NEWCASTLE, before they realised that they must have "missed their turn-off"!!

They are SO used to things being long-distance, they couldn't get their heads around shorter distances; i.e London to Notts, 3 hours TOPS, with multiple turn-offs, they could drive 6 hours PLUS without an intersection!!!
