Excellent memory jerker Andrew for us in the UK and probably an eye opener for your USA readers.
On my first ever visit to the USA 40 years ago I was suddenly hit by the differences. Not just at retail level. It somehow seemed a much freer society, forward looking and of course prosperous.
As a tourist of course I wasn't aware of some of the tensions that existed at social level but I soon learned that on my many subsequent trips including a full East and West Coast visit for business.

My guess is that there are people in the towns of Hebburn and Jarrow reliving part of their childhood through your words.
