Well remembered Andrew & very well written.
I remember those days when nothing happened on Sunday's apart from going to Mass at St Aloysius.
We used to visit my Scottish Dunn grandparents in Cuthbert St & I'd look in their 'Sunday Post' for 'Oor Wullie' & 'The Broons' haha

Yes, I fondly remember Oor Wullie and the Broons myself, I've got a future blog post coming up about the Sunday Post.

As I said in this article, perhaps we have gained some things by having extended shopping hours and Sunday trading, but at the same time we have lost the very thing you describe, the sense of peace and quiet that Sundays used to bring, a chance to take a breath before your work or school week began again.

And one of the first things I did when we moved up to Scotland (2019) was to buy a Sunday paper (Sunday Post) and sit and read Oor Willie, and The Broons, which I have done every Sunday since then!

Remember that shops shut half day on Wednesdays and all day Sundays which for me was Newcastle Quay Side day.

I have just posted this on Andrew's blog...

Excellent memory jerker Andrew for us in the UK and probably an eye opener for your USA readers.
On my first ever visit to the USA 40 years ago I was suddenly hit by the differences. Not just at retail level. It somehow seemed a much freer society, forward looking and of course prosperous.
As a tourist of course I wasn't aware of some of the tensions that existed at social level but I soon learned that on my many subsequent trips including a full East and West Coast visit for business.
Thank you again.
My guess is that there are people in the towns of Hebburn and Jarrow reliving part of their childhood through your words.
I certainly am.........!
