Tanker and Cargo vessels collided ofthe East Yorkshire Coast

How absolutely stupid is that with all the technology ships have.

A complete instrument failure should not cause this. There is supposedly to be someone at the helm 24/7.

I thought that you would or should have a helmsman, watch keeper/ lookout, radar operator on duty at any one time. Am I out of date?

It should never have happened.

The Tanker was at Anchor or stopped and is US military fuel supply vessel It appears. The cargo, Aircraft fuel which blew.

Could it be deliberate?

The cargo vessel has containers on board and some of them distorted or expanded with the heat. The rest of the ship looks as if a blowtorch ran over it. It was traveling at 16 knots it appears.

Reports no doubt later.

First a colossal navigation error by whatever/whoever. That down to the skipper, bridge staff, radar staff engineering. The skipper first in line.

The area it occurred was possibly dedicated to anchorage for hazardous cargos. We shall see.

The cargo vessel was recorded as sailing at 16 knots which is far too fast when in close proximity of other vessels or an anchorage area. The Tanker would have been seen to coming to a halt by the Cargo vessels lookouts and there should have been radio communication between the two.

No doubt everything will have been recorded by the Coastguard.

Second a deliberate collision, which I hope not! Certainly the crew of the cargo vessel will be now under lock and key or should be.

The News said that the Cargo container carrier did not veer from its course or slow down.

Big question to be asked of that crew.

The sea conditions off the Yorkshire coast

Up in Northumberland it’s rough inshore with a strong NE wind but so far no big rollers maybe the wind has not been strong enough from the same direction for seas to build up.

The Farnes could be restricting wave buildup inshore but there is no sign of rollers as yet.

The seas off the Yorkshire coast look to be similar so work on the two ships made easier if they can risk getting close.

It looks as if the Cargo ship hit the Tanker on its port side maybe a third of the way forward. That could be close to the Tankers heavy fuel oil tanks or oil supply system.

Hopefully neither ship will be lost and their cargo saved from the water, well most of it.

The collision was in what they call the outer anchorage I see.

Is this another case of a not properly trained crew?
