Birmingham’s Uncollected Rubbish.

It takes me back to the end of the 1970’s. No rubbish collected all over the country. No burials as the grave diggers we also on strike. It seems once again the Unions are running the country and A Rayner is giving them more power with The Employment Rights Bill.

They aren't striking for wage increase but to stop new contracts being introduced that could make them up to £8k worse per year. If it was happening to us we wouldn't be happy either.

Apparently, I don’t know if it op is true, but the Leader of the Council has nit had any meetings with the strikers, I find that very odd??

Liz, Birmingham council is awful, has been for years, cuts to workers conditions and pay but the councillors have awarded themselves a pay rise.

Brian, I read it was because they are cutting the role of waste recycling and collecting officers ( WRCO) which appears to be a none job, but the council will employ them in other jobs. Of 170 officers, 40 will not accept the offer.

There's teams of refuse collectors and recycling collectors, the conditions offered were not the same hence the bother.

Brian, I think I would be furious if I was paying my council tax every month and had to live in those conditions. We are very lucky as council refuse was privatised years ago. I don’t know what their contract is, but recently the council have been buying new electric refuse vehicles. They never have this nonsense about if the lid is not closed the bin won’t be emptied. They have caught on that they have been losing money as it’s now £70.00 a year for the garden bin, but people have moved house and cancelled their direct debit. The new owners have been using the service without paying. This financial year you had to pay for the bin either on line or phone the council. You are then sent a large yellow sticker for the top of your bin. No yellow sticker and the bin is not emptied.

I would too, council trying to be clever. I think they have a case for a rebate. There was one street hired a flatbed truck and dumped the refuse in the town centre.
Up here they introduced a £20 per large item pick up, the thing is they would pick up stuff that was dumped at the same time which made a lot of people think why should I pay, I'll get the same service.
It's been changed now as it was costing the council a fortune in fly tipping pick ups, more than they were getting in from the large pick ups.

Fly tipping is a nightmare mind you some Councils only have themselves to blame, our waste disposal site is only open on certain days which is fine but we still have to make an appointment to be allowed access to the tip, very irritating to say the least.

We can only go certain days you have to take ID and proof of address. Absolutely ridiculous.

When we book we have to give our car registration details when you arrive everything is checked, absolutely crazy no wonder there is so much fly tipping.

It is similar here. The idea when the opened Waste Disposal, it was thought it would stop fly tipping, but then as usual the councils got greedy and anyone doing DIY had to pay as a professional builder for any rubbish, so although I don’t agree with them, just tip their rubbish anywhere. I can’t understand seeing old mattresses dumped in the roads. I thought if you bought a new bed/mattress they took the old one away.

Old mattresses are taken away when a new one is purchased but you have to pay for that service, the thing that I can get my head around is if a person or persons takes the trouble to load an old mattress onto a car or whatever why just dump it why can’t they just take it to the household waste, people just don’t have pride in their surroundings anymore.

Rubbish disposal is a massive problem. for the world.
Here in the UK we had Incinerators for a brief time but then they were banned & demolished because of the air pollution.
They will probably have to start building them again one day but with carbon capture facilities built in.
I dont know where South Tyneside dump their rubbish nowadays as all local quarries must be full by now & we cant rely on Quarries to dump into forever..

The big con with the bin's is, we already pay for this service in our council tax/rates, now we have to pay extra for its disposal, for me it's like a stealth tax. I had to wrap an old mattress in plastic before they would come and collect it, and charged, like it was a private service! someone's making a lot of money out of this open scam. no wonder they are reluctant to prosecute fly tippers.
