Payment for Hospital parking Beware

Our Harrogate car park photo’s your number plate on entry and exit.

You then go to one of 3 machines on leaving and enter your Reg’n number and it shows you your car. Not that you can see the Reg’n number. I always known the entry time within 15 mins.

You pay by cash or card. I always pay by card and that’s when there is a possible catch.

If you use your card it should bring up acceptance and ask if you want a receipt. It’s always best to get one. Why because some people that I have spoken to have the feeling that your payment does sometimes not register and then you get. £70 fine but reduced to £35 if you pay the fine within so many days.

We have both had hospital appointments since early Feb. About 4 per month in total And had no problems paying as always got a receipt, but at the beginning of the month got sent a fine notice. I’m very sure that I paid but did not ask for a receipt.

I avoid one of the 3 machines as don’t trust it as had difficulty in making payment.

After today’s successful visit to the consultant (all Clear thank goodness) went to pay and mention to the lady behind me to ask for a receipt. She had the same problem and got a fine notice.

It could be that if you have used your card say 5 or 6 times before going to the hospital it’s kicked out by card company as a security measure. So you think you’ve paid but you have’nt.

This restriction on the use of your card, I was not fully aware of the “restrictions” and still a bit vague.

The multi storey car park in town has a very similar system but you can only get out if payment made. The Hospital had no barrier.

Hope the system where you are is better than ours.

About 10 yrs ago I found out chemo patients were paying to park for treatment in Hartlepool and Middlesbrough so I tackled Alan Foster, NHS top man at Hartlepool and Middlesbrough hospitals asking why they had to pay when some were terminal. In the end I lost my temper and he wouldn't see me or answer his phone. After months he gave up and granted 12 spaces. It was worth it! I admire people who buy a plot near the hospital and charge a fraction of these money grabbers!

Hate to rub it in Allan, but as I have said before, hospital parking is FREE in Scotland, as is town centre parking, unless it's private land...which is a rarity.

We've been here 6 years now, and not paid a single penny for parking, and why SHOULD we?

It's just a nutty stealth tax, that councils/hospitals etc have got away with for years in England/Wales, with NO justification!!!

Can you imagine (I own a dog boarding kennel) if a customer arrived with their dog/cat, and I said "oh, by the way, to park on my property, to drop off your dog/cat, there will be a charge of XX pounds!!!!!"

Same deal in a town? You drive into town to spend money...usually... and get an extra charge for the priviledge.....

I hate to have to pay for parking especially if you are bringing business into a town, village or whatever, we frequently visit Stow on the Wold, in the Cotswolds, a very strange thing there, in the centre of Stow there is 2 hours free parking, if you can’t find a space there, often very busy during the Season, Bank Holidays etc, you then need to park in a car park less than 5 mins walk into the centre of Stow, guess what you have to pay for parking in that car park, not only do you have to pay but in order to do so you need to have to have taken a university degree in how to use the machine!!

Personally I don’t think people visiting hospitals for appointments etc should have to pay for parking, after all appointments are often delayed, take longer than expected which necessitates paying extra to park, or worse not payin* enough and then receiving a fine.
