Hebburn man on BBC's 'Beat the Finish Line' today

This programme was a repeat but worth watching on Catch Up as Hebburn man Mick Laffey wins the show.
Mick is a great guy & uses a wheelchair but it doesnt stop him enjoying life. If you need a good Solicitor he's a director at Burnetts in Newcastle & lives in Hebburn.He's a BIG Newcastle Fan aswell.

Lovely family the Laffeys .Seem to remember going in his Nana and Grandads house in Cuthbert St .Have Mary and Norman as there names happy days.

I remember a Mrs Laffey who lived in Glen Street. My Mum told me she had a son called Victor who was killed in WW2. Another son married Amy Stewart, who lived across the road in Glen Street, she also had a daughter called Nelly. Maria, I wonder if they are related

Hi Sheila only knew the family in Cuthbert St .They may have been a big family .My surname was Burke there were as far as I know three family's in Hebburn same surname no relation . All properly came over from Ireland a common surname .

You are probably right Maria. I remember a girl from school, Cathrine Burke, but we were at St Aloysius and am I right in remembering yiu were st Clegwell.

The Laffey family lived above us on Glen Street, but I don't remember any mention of relatives from Cuthbert Street.

Maybe they moved to Glen st when Cuthbert st demolished as everyone when rehoused were spread out .Can only remember the older couple .But came to mind a name Nelly Laffey as Sheila said .

I don’t remember any either, but remember the Laffey family well. Of course not their son who was killed in WW2, I Just remember my Mum telling me about him.

Yes Sheila Clegwell .Sounds as you are right can only think it was one of the sons who lived in Glen st as I said only remember the elderly couple Have got Nelly Laffey a name I have heard of .

Maria, I think they lived in Glen Street in the 1940’s for My Mum to know the family. I remember them in the 1950’s in Glen Street. Interesting as you say, lots of people with the same name in the same town, but not related..

Another name Martin Laffey comes to me maybe he was the Grandad or could have been Great Grandad Not Norman Laffey maybe ?.

Maria, I’m not really sure, I must admit think the guy I remember was a Norman Laffey. He was once a local councillor in Hebburn. Someone may remember.

Sheila all I can think Martin the dad Norman one of the sons. I was only about ten when I remember the elderly couple in Cuthbert St .Many years ago also when I sit and think go to Hebburn Cemetery when I can seem to remember a headstone Laffey on the Catholic side this site is so good brings things to mind .Hope someone remembers something .

Yes Sheila you are right, Norman was a councellor,
the Laffey family lived above us for many years in Glen Street, Mr and Mrs Laffey, Victor, Norman, Nellie and sid, Victor died a terrible tragedy just after the war, I believe he was testing a plane that crashed, I was very young at the time, but remember going to the cemetery with Nellie on a Sunday morning to put flowers on Victors grave. I do know that people used to visit, could have been the Laffey's from Cuthbert Street.

Thanks for helping my memory Anne. I remember the Laffey family and the son who married Amy Stewart, but was not sure if his name was Norman.

Maria, perhaps the Laffey family from Cuthbert Street were related as strange they both chose Norman as a name for their son.

Yes Sheila have still got the names Martin maybe the Dad and Norman a Son .Like a lot of family's you often had the same Christian name more than once in the family in mam's family there were so many named after another family member .

Martin Laffey was a bookie on the corner of EIlison st Cuthbert st backlands in the 1950s

I thought maybe they were related as Laffey is such an uncommon name.
