Stan Could you tell me where I can get historical information on Wardley Methodist Church prior to 1956?
Not the one on Thorne Ave, the one that was near the reservoir and old Wardley school and I believe there was a pit there

Here is a photo from my Book.
The Pit in the photo was fully modernised in the 1950s.
I served my engineering apprenticeship at the 'new'Wardley Colliery & also at Follonsby Colliery where the workshops were.

Thank you Norman my grandparents moved from hebburn in 1937 to Wardley, Reservoir street which I believe is on the photograph

Norman was that pit also running in conjunction with Follonsby? Do you have any dates as to when they both were opened?.

Wardley was a working Pit in the 1870s.
Follonsby was sunk in 1907 & finished in 1911.
When I was there in the early 60s Follonsby was Wardley number 1 Pit & Wardley was number 2 Pit.
A large roadway went from the shaft at the 1260ft level to Follonsby shaft where all the coal was taken to the surface including Usworth coal.

Norman has this brilliant photo. Sorry to say Carol, if it wasn't GRII listed, it would have been demolished without any historical traces left. However, may I suggest Gateshead council who should have some record or even the County Hall in Durham who should have some info on it. I suspect by the dates and looking at the photo the name John Dobson crops up with me as he did all over the north east. I will try next week when the bank holiday is over. I only hope I can help!

Stan may I ask how your good lady is getting on?
Is she making good progress?
I fractured my femur last August while on a cruise.
I am now only using my walker while outdoors, managing to get around the home although slowly without my walking aids.
As a glutton for punishment we are starting our travels again in July.ha ha

Thank you Carol. Mo is learning to walk again after 4 months and needs a 3 wheeler permanently as her balance has gone. However, the good news is that our local village 15 pub staff sent her a get well card all signed! We went last week for the first time for a meal and they even laid a table with flowers on....
