The elephant on the tyne hotel on the river is bee refurbished lots of skips & trades people down there anybody know what it's for

Ray, apparently it is going to be called The Rivers Edge Hotel and will be a care home. Nice location for a care hime but I just wonder what the residential costs will be, quite astronomical I would imagine.

It's a bit isolated down there your right about the fees there ridiculous .our bungalow is in trust so the council can't touch it

Sheila, if at some stage in the future Ray and if he is married need residential care they could be forced to sel their home to finance the cost of such care. All very annoying as people who haven’t contributed a penny to society can be given free residential care, it just isn’t right but that is how it is. It seems as though Ray has put his property into Trust which, hopefully, will mean he doesn’t need to sell it to pay for care, I think this arrangement needs to be in place for at least 7 years.

That is my understanding, it is my further understanding you have to have less than £26,000 in your bank account in order to qualify for free care, I could be wrong.

Maria, I have to agree. Every year when we get our new council tax bill. One of the leaflets is a round “cake”. This tells where the money is spent and just over half, goes to adults service which includes the cost of care homes. I don’t know what the answer is.

Sheila if you go into care and you have a property and you die .The deeds are held so you pay the care home bill before you are able to sell . The land registry take control happened with mam's flat .

Just thinking this was 2001 mam was only in six months before she died .They had her pension and my sister went in each month to pay the extra owed when she died the final bill came in days after not payed no deeds so no sale until all settled .

Absolutely disgusting Maria. I thought you were allowed to keep some of the cash from the property . I thought the last government allowed you to keep £86,000, but this government took it away.

It was supposed to happen Sheila but it never did. My late mum had dementia, I had promised her that I would never put her into residential care no matter what, to be honest it was better for me to pay for mum to be cared for in her own home than pay the really high fees care homes demand, it worked out fine, mum was able to stay in her own home until she passed away, it must be awful to have to sell family homes to pay for care.

That was great they you managed to have your mum cared for at home. I agree that the care home at least in this area are so expensive. My daughter’s friend’s mum is in her90’s and has psid over £1000,000 th her care home. Most are now almost £2,000 per week.

I was glad I was able to keep my promise it meant I didn’t have to sell the house that my parents had lived in since 1950, it was also nice that when I sold mum’s house it was to a nurse who had taken care o& mum during her many stays in hospital.

The flat Sheila was lovely .Looked on to Playing field but going back to 2001 prices were lower .If I remember rightly we had to start paying council tax even when it was empty .No big amount when all was settled we sold to some one we knew let it go cheap .

We are both 78 worked all our life & still paying tax.How mutch money have we put into the system in 62 tax paying years when some people have paid nothing .all our governments have done nothing to help we pensioners . We are one of the few countries that make us pay for our care .its cost us around £ 4000 to ring fence our property .ive paid enough they are not getting my family's inheritance

We are in our 80’s and paid tax all our lives. It’s good you have ring fenced your property, but will that mean you expect other taxpayers to pay if you need care. My thoughts are, that the government should have sorted care for the elderly, but each Party in power avoids it.

Ray nothing personal to you .Dad was hard worker up early out in all weathers he never reached 70 What mam had in savings was used each month to top up her care as I said she was only in care home six months before she died .The system is all wrong but if you have property you pay if you have to go into care.

Over the years we have paid in many many thousands of pounds into the system .some of that money will go to less fortunate people also unfortunately to scroungers & boat people.why should i have to pay again & again .No one seems happy with what ive done but charity stars at home looking after yuor oown first .i cant trust anyone to look after my family especially our governments im sorry if it upset people but family comes first

Yes Ray understand where you are coming from .My family may also suffer in the future when the council tax rises in the future to pay for a higher care bill.

I think my friend in Somerset had the right idea. They own their property and having inherited some money. She has left I instructions with her daughter and solicitor that the money should be used to have home care when they can’t manage themselves.

When I first heard that the council wanted to empty Durham Court. It crossed my mind did they want it for immigrants. Thankfully it was decided the tenants could remain.

Sorry Maria, I thought it was decided and the Tennants could stay. I hope it will ok, as it’s really central for older people. I know you used to be have to 50 before you could apply to live there. Perhaps that has all changed.

Seems as though you have read it right Maria, they reckon it would cost about £12 million to maintain the block, just wonder how much i5 will eventually cost to knock down and rebuild?

This is sad news. Where is the proof how much it would cost to upgrade. The council can tell people what they like and no one really knows, what the cost would be. That is a lot of people to rehouse.
