I've just managed to find the Durham court Flats story Michael Crooks mentioned yesterday so click this LINK to read.
There are similar multi storey Flats all over the country so why is it that only Hebburn ones are being demolished???
Are Jarrow Flats next?

I can’t understand why they are destroying good homes. 50 years is not old. More wasted money. I remember when my friend lived there. She had a nice modern bathroom fitted, then the council decided it was updating the bathrooms including hers. I remember she asked if she could keep hers, but it refused. This how they were waste money, but I suppose that is the council way.

Its hard to believe a Council would have expenive Multi Storey Flats built knowing they would only last 40 odd years.
I say that because the Council statement said 'they have exceeded their intended expected lifespan'even they were just 50 yrs old when this news first broke about demolition.

Interesting that the article says that the residents will be rehired - but where??

I remember reading once that during the 1980s when people were allowed to buy their council houses, the promise was that the money raised from the sales would be used to build more council houses. That clearly didn't happen, hence the shortage of council houses in Britain today.

So why knock down perfectly good flats? Even with £12 million to update them, that's got to be cheaper than building from scratch!

AJG, Mrs Thatcher as the Prime minister who decided people could buy their council house. It was never to raise money to build more council houses , just the opposite. There was a problem with Labour Councils not collecting rent especially in London, it was like free houses it just couldn’t continue. It gave people a chance of owning their own property , but she wouldn’t allow the money to be used to build more council houses when Tennants decided they didn’t want to pay rent. It’s a bit like now . The rest of the world think everything is free in England.

You're right that the perception is that you can come to England and get a free ride. That's why we have the problems we have!
