Wartime Newcastle

This photo was taken around WW2 time.
I dont think board regulars Sheila, Liz & Maria were out shopping when this photo was taken

You are right Norman funds were bit tight that day, also Maria had a day off so no discounts would have been forthcoming.

I think if it as WW2, was the only one around and maybe learning to walk😳😀

Taken after 1945 up to say 1950. When did petrol rationing end?

Why, the headlights not masked and too many cars about so say 1948. All look prewar cars or design.

The head came off Greys Monument in 1941 and was replaced in 1947, on the photo he has his head.

It was thought that a lightning strike did it, I thought I'd mention it as it means the photo is after 1947

Brian you're right. It was a lightning strike.The replacement was brought up from London on a ship called Halcyon.

Mac I agree. I have been studying on and off about Newcastle for 68 yrs and I'm still learning. I started with a visit to the keep battlements to do some train spotting with the late Ed Nesbitt and curiosity about the keep became a lifetime pastime! Since retirement, and moving to Liverpool, the building and architecture of churches and cathedrals keeps me busy. However, there are lots of people on this board who can do better than myself and I have learned so much from it..

This board has been a revelation to me about my home town.

Why I now realise that although I lived, schooled and for a short time worked in Hebburn know nowt about it.

That was due I think that as I lived in Crawley Ave. far away from Hebburn town centre and the quay, meant that I never knew it.

I suppose we were sort of isolated, if I had joined the Boys Brigade instead of St. John’s scouts it might have been different.

If I had not worked in Hebburn Palmers but another company what would I have turned out to be job wise and lifestyle.

Thanks Allan. The main reason I will take the photos of St Cuthbert's and St. Oswalds churches in 2 weeks time is because when I see some of Norman's requests to put names etc to photos I think that sometimes we have lost the grip on history and Norman is trying to do as much as he can to record history. In my case, if I don't take these photos, more history will go down the pan and be lost for ever. These 2 churches are 19th century so worth the 300 miles round trip from Liverpool!

Good on you Stan. There is a lot of local history of Hebburn that is being lost as us older folk fade away.

I have seen a lot photographs of Hebburn folk because my Grandfather was an avid taker of photographs. Mainly of his family but others appear now and again. My father also took some photos but no where near the same amount.

A lot of those photos have been put on the board some years ago.

In connection with St. Cuthbert’s, St. Oswald’s plus St. John’s.

I have a photo of St. John’s Cub Scouts at their HUT in around 1922. On it is young boys who in later life became head people at Reyrolle’s. And other companies.
Thank goodness Dad wrote the names on the back for me.

There is another photo of a joint camp of St. John’s and St. Cuthbert’s Cubs and Scouts taken in about 1926. There could be nearly 60 to 80 odd Cubs and Scouts plus parents on it.

I can identify my father, his sister and my grandparents on it.

On that photo there could well be the grandparents and great grandparents of the younger folk that come on the board on the board.

Back in the 50’s and early 60’s you had scouts and cubs at nearly all the churches. I cannot remember Girl Guides but there was Girls Guildry or similar. Boys Brigade. Army, Navy and Air Cadets.

But a bit vague on those as I was in St. John’s Scouts so never really down the Quay.

Have a good journey over to Hebburn and back.

Thank you Allan. Many people throw old photos away but I never do. With dvd help and editing it's not hard to revive old sepia and b&w photos. Thanks again..
