As its Sunday, I thought we should go to church (St Pauls)

The ruins date back to the 600s so at least 1400 yrs old. If you stare for a few mins you might see Stan Wears & Jimmy Guy the verger pottering around (just joking)

Very nice Norman! I'm still doing the research on it. One day, Jimmy Guy the Verger phoned me to chat about missing stones in the monastery. I immediately drove up to jarrow and scoured the area. Most were easily recognisable by size, material and masons broaching etc. In a few hours I found lots in the cemetery wall and Port of Tyne wall. OK, better used than ditched but in my opinion, should have been secured on site. This is how history disappears for good.

Jimmy and I I were friends in 1027 Squadron (Jarrow) Air Training Corps when we were younger, he, and his wife Margaret are a lovely couple.

Jimmy has had to retire from doing the research due to severe bad health and struggling to talk.He has given me a very rare book about church architecture. He is also the chaplain at 1027sqdn.Also Margaret is in very bad health too. As you say Mac,a lovely couple. I shall pass on your good wishes....

We do know there's 3 small buildings below the church. Access could have only been via the North side of the monastery. There a 3 burials 9" under the top altar step. The bell tower is not keyed into the main structure. There's a host of mysteries surrounding the church not found in any other. Maybe one day an excavation order will unravel it all....

Colin, my inside info tells me they are doing random digs hoping to find maybe Victorian relics. They've done it before and found nothing. If they start test bores they'll find sand at 2.5ft. The total rise from the chur h to the top of the bank is 60ft. Personally I don't think they'll find anything due to the massive build up of land. At one time the church had water at high tide on 3 sides. It has totally changed but who knows. I'm held up as I am not allowed to use a metal detector but theodolite and level ok at a later date. English Heritage own the area around the church and monastery...

Thanks Colin. We also know there are ruins of a village under the park so maybe that's it. Could be wrong. Ground Penetrating Radar was used to find the 3 buildings in tact. GPR works like an x-ray. You drill a hole, put the camera down and scan it bit by bit. I found the holes in the floor, so we know exactly where those buildings are from radar results sheets. As for the park, many folk won't know that there was a roman watch tower around the Old Hall. Fascinating history but very addictive...
