Please get an RFID wallet for them.

In Harrogate there has been a spate of card skimming in recent weeks in the main shopping areas but that is not always the case.

These people only have to walk near you for a few minutes or seconds to scan your card.

I bought one of these wallets yesterday at the National Trust Shop in Seahouses and today checked that it worked in a Cafe.

Don’t be caught.

Just put a piece of tin foil in your wallet etc
Stops the scammers

I understand that all foil does not work depending on type make thickness etc.

My wallet cost only £8 and it works as tried it.

I note that you say that foil doesn't work but that you tested your new RFID wallet and it did. What was the methodology which lead you to that conclusion?

The whole thing is overblown. Whilst RFID Skimming can occur in the situation you suggest (ie a criminal standing next to you) it is VERY unlikely and frankly I wouldn't bother.

But if you are happy to have spent £8 on a wallet that makes you feel safe and secure then that is a result for you and the retailer who sold you the item!

When the tap and pay first started, I was sent a card by my bank. I thought I would use it in the Supermarket. As I waited for the assistant to tell me to tap, before I did it, the machine was giving her my receipt. Oh she said it’s already worked. I sent the card back. Got the old type, I still put my card number in the machine, I have apologised to assistants about not having the “tap” card and been told often lots of people don’t use it, which was a surprise to me.

Lots do use Tap and pay without problem Sheila.

I'm with you Sheila, I still put my card into the machine and type in my 4 digit code number. I really dont know if it makes any difference as far as security goes, swipe or pin, but I still prefer to use the old methods. I wont use any banking apps either, I'm just starting to use bank tranfers from my laptop and thats because they've closed all the banks. I always used cash and the counter service.

I don’t mind being asked for my PIN I believe in the long run, to a certain degree, it helps prevent fraud. I am worried that they are considering lifting the limit of £100 before asking for your PIN to my mind that is asking for trouble with thieves using stolen cards.

As for you rarely would get skimmed, tell that to the people in Harrogate skimmed a few weeks ago. I hope they only lost £100 max but !

You would rarely be skimmed! You don’t want skimmed at all.

Our new Tesco credit cards which came 2 months ago and they can be skimmed so maybe every new card will be the same.

In Aldi a year or so ago I did not have to get my card out of my wallet or out of my pocket.

I’ve covered myself for £8. On your head be it if you get skimmed.

Check with your card supplier but I expect that will be maybe a waste of time. Just look at your cards there will be two silver bits and a logo with Four radius bars which signify that it connects with card machines ( well my Tesco has)

My Tesco card asked for the PIN number say 4 x out of 10 uses or something like that as is a bit random. If I use it 2x within a short time I have to enter Pin on second time.

Thank you for your advice Allan.
I am fully aware of RFID cards and I repeat that the incidence of skimming is relatively rare although there is no doubt that worldwide fraud of all sorts is on the increase as is the number apocryphal horror stories. Much of the skimming is via a device inserted into ATM's or other point of sale devices not "walk-bys". Even if skimmed the Banks will refund on a fraudulent transaction. The key has always been to regularly check your various accounts for anomalies and deal with them.
By the way to add to my knowledge base please tell me how your checked that your new wallet is working?

After a purchase I asked the lady to try to read my card again with card in its new case and held it very close to the reader.

It did not register On that Machine so good for now.

Will give it a try elsewhere when going to pay for an item without taking card out of its case.

Is that proof maybe maybe not but I’m happier.

As I am rarely in Town I may never be near skimmers.

Once at Asda and then Aldi.

If you tap reader with your card in its case it could well be read.

I think the info bleeds out the opening of your case as your card is not fully encased.

Card could not be read if held say 150mm away from reader.

At the end of the day it’s in the luck of the gods, as least I’ve tried to minimise any monetary loss.

There is one thing though, credit cards well watched by bank but if debit card no idea but it may be wise to check your limit.

It used to be £250 then it went up but you have to enter a PIN number.

It’s up to you to safeguard your cards as best you can.
