Ice Cream Shops in the Newtown.

I remember 'Paski's' & Fusaro's Ice Cream shops in Station Rd & Tennant St in the 1950s?
A relative of the Fusaro family has recently ordered one of my Hebburn books & attached this photo. Ive added the name and approx decade I was given. I remember the Italian lady Pasqualina in the Station Rd shop .

I'm sure she was married to Joe and Paski who ran the Station Rd parlour was married to Tony. Tony kept his horse and cart at the stables in Quarry Rd where Brian Mc Dougall and lived. Tony often took us to the cemetery to get grass to feed his horse! Great people, great days!

Brings back memories of visits to the Fusaro parlour with my Hebburn based Aunts and Uncles in the late 40's.

paski,e nicest lady you could ever meet, I'm sure they came over from Italy (twenties thirties) but not sure, beautiful ice cream, mugs of bovril to dye for, but am sure she wasn't married.

Remember the Ice Cream shop on Station Road but not Tennant Street.

Remember the Fusaro ice cream parlour on Station Road and think the family lived on Victoria Road.

I remember enjoying many ice creams at Paski's in the 1960's. Many years later when my mother moved to Mill Crescent, she told me that one of the sisters was still around and living further down on the estate.

Joseph, I’m sure Pasqualina (Paski) was the very large lady, the sister to the two brothers. Their family home was opposite the Rex cinema, on Victoria Road West, or as we called it the High Road, a nice house. I remember a boy and girl called Thompson from Hebburn and their Mum was a relative to the Fusaro family.

White's also had an Ice Cream shop on Station Rd, close to Victoria Rd.

Anne , I can’t remember whites. Can you remember what shops were near it.

Sheila, I can't remember any other shops, it wasn't a popular ice cream shop, I was there with three other girls, only once, but it was very close to Victoria Rd, I don't even think it was there too long either, I believe it belonged to Whites on Mill Lane.

I remember Dambies,(probably spelt wrong) fruit shop,Carricks beautiful cake shop,there was another one cant remember what it was, and then further down was Shepards, Meldrums pork shop and propper pies, Chronicle office and I think L and N general dealer's, (So There).

Yes Joseph, I remember most of those shops too, Mr White was a farmer up on Mill Lane by the Coke Ovens, he also opened up the ice cream shop Station Rd and a fruit shop which was next door to the fish and chip shop on the corner of Thistle St and Victoria Rd.

I know the fruit shop on Victoria Road West , it was next door to Nesbitt Fish and Chip shop which was owned by two brothers. I also remember all the shops Joseph mentioned, but the Danbys I remember was on Tennant Street, Eliza (Danby) Bird ran it with her husband. He had lost an arm and it always fascinated me how he would put fruit in a brown paper bag and twist it closed with one hand. I do know there was another Danbys but can’t place it on Station Road, like the ice cream shop, I will blame it on old age😀

The only shop called White's that I could find was John White (Greengrocer) 32 Victoria Rd West.
Thanks to a lovely man that still lives in the Newtown called Albert Phipps who sent me a list of Newtown Shops many years ago.

Norman, the ice cream shop may not have been called Whites, but it was definitely there, I don't remember it being around for very long, I was there with three other friends.

There was a Ned Danby, that had the greengrocers on Birtwhistle Avenue, just off Crawley Avenue, but nowhere near the High Road.

Danby's had a Fruit & Veg shop in the row of 3 shops on Cambridge Ave in the 50s. They also had a shop in Jarrow's Viking Shopping Precinct & ran by Mr Danby's son.

Hi Sheila, yes, I do remember he had a horse & cart, but the most memorable horse & cart belonged to the Rag & Bone man...he had balloons that he would give to us kids!

All interesting memories Malcolm. I remember Ned was a bit of a character and his wife was such a lady, total opposites.

I don't recall either of them in person, but I DO recall the shop, as you entered, the smell of fresh veg....or soil !!!

Big bags of loose spuds, carrots, etc.

You just reminded me the man who had a shop on Cambridge Ave was Norman Danby & his son ran Danby's in Jarrow Viking Precinct.

Ned Danby had a horse and cart , but he didn’t have any children.He had the Birtwhistle Avenue shop. I only remember Ned and Eliza,, but knew there were other brother/ brothers.
