The Tudor Shoppe

I might have posted about this before. Does anyone remember the Tudor Shoppe that used to be next door to the Jet garage on Victoria Road West?

It's a private house now, but I remember as a child going there with my mam and getting sweets. I'm not sure what else the shop sold, but my abiding memory is of getting a bag of Rainbow Drops, which were like Rice Krispies but all different colours.

In the 1980s, the shop was turned into a hairdressing salon for a while. I remember it still having the name The Tudor Shoppe but then it may have changed.

Does anyone remember the Tudor Shoppe, who owned it and what it sold, or have any information about when it became a private house?

Well remebered AJG, I remember it well. Here it is many years later. They had to close after losing your trade

In the 1950’s it was owned by Mr and Mrs Beck, they had one son called Stanley. I remember the couple who bought it , but can’t remember their name. They had two sons. In the 1950’s there was a shop next door called Avery, I think they sold fruit and veg. I remember a large plaster bunch of bananas. My sister told me their were bananas as we didn’t have bananas just after WW2.

I too remember Becks and Avery. We lived in Kent Avenue and I remember going into Becks for sweets and our bread. They kept a limited range of groceries- happy memories.

If I'm not mistaken when it was the hairdressers it was owned by Moira Toal (don't know her married name).
When she was single she lived in Dukes Avenue, as I also did.

Yes Moira Toal did own it her married name was Johnston she sold it to her assisted called Val who ran it as a hairdressers then converted it to the house I thing she still lives there.

Remember it well because when it was owned by Mr & Mrs Beck my Mam used to work there.

Looking at the photo again. I think it was much nicer with the two shops and garage. I don’t think the modernisation is an improvement. It was much nicer as I remember it, from the late 1940’s/ 1950’s.
