An old one from the late 40's showing the co-op in Lyon Street. I remember upstairs on a Saturday night with Jessie's dance during the 60's.

I was a butcher boy in the black road shop, regularly had to go down to Lyon stree shop for meat etc, I'm sure the manager was called Leo philipin, manager black Rd Baden Powel, ( little bit trivia)._🤣🤣🤣

I remember that building as a child around the time of demolition in 1984, as I knew a few school friends who lived nearby thinking it was haunted. Does anyone know what the last shops were in there and when it closed?

My first 9 yrs of life from baby to 9yrs old in 1953 was living in a upstairs Flat 14 Lyon St about 50 yards from that Co-op at 29 & 30.
I've told this piece of our history before but as we have new visitors to this Forum here it is again

In WW2 a German Bomb landed in the middle of the street infront of the Co-op causing a 15ft crater but thankfully it didnt explode. It didnt even break the Co-op's windows.

You're right Colin, but when the "Power House Club" closed in the late 50's Jessie moved the dance to the store hall.

I have ,lived in hampshire for coming up to 53 years and we have a co-op in the village but I still say I am going to the Store

Carol, the CO OP in Tennant Street had a room I assume with a kitchen above the shop and we always called it The Store Hall.
