The field behind the Clock pub rumour

I was speaking to a resident of St. Oswalds estate in Hebburn earlier and she has heard that the field behind the Clock pub has been bought by Hebburn Town football club to be used as training facilities. I think that this includes one or two buildings being erected also.

Peter, I was told it takes 2 yrs to wind up a church yet suddenly I get a message that St. Oswalds is going to be "sooner than you think". So there could be a connection with what you are saying.

Could the congregation be transferring to St Cuthberts? The closure of the church would probably speed up the process.

Yes, there could be Stan. It makes me wonder what the foundations are like for building on that field as there was one of the old Hebburn pits located around that area once I think.

If St Oswalds closes first then parishioners are invited to St Cuthberts if its still in use or both lots of parishioners are invited to St John's which will still be serving C of E people for years to come.
Here is a 1912 map showing the field behind the Clock Hotel was once a Clay Quarry. Then you can see a bit further north is 'B' Pit and St Oswalds Church

Some foundations now are called floating bed or raft. They are thick reinforced concrete that floats on soft earth. In the USA and Japan, they build skyscrapers on them where they withstand earthquakes etc. Hard to believe but sometimes the founds float on a bed of oil !As for moving congregations to St Cuthberts I somehow can't see it Brian as it's fair walk!

We attended St Oswald's Church. It would have been too far yo walk to St Cuthberts.
