I HEARD Andrew Leslie's gggrandson is getting involved so he surely will want a museum in Hebburn where Mr Leslie started his shipyard.
All the person who came up with this idea has are some old draughtsman drawings possibly from Swan Hunters to exhibit in a museum.

When Hebburn Village was started 1986, it was in the plans that there would be shops, a hotel and a Maritime Museum. Still waiting 40 years on.

Leslie's had the Destroyer in the Dock and it was open for viewing. Not sure why Council or Charity or something else could not have been utilised.

Shipbuilding past.
Nearly all defence spending/building is now done on the Clyde or Rosyth.Ironically the SNP used to have policy of no Nuclear in Scotland. Not sure if that is still the same.

Scotland still has the "No Nuke" policy, but defence is not within the remit of the Scottish Government. So the subs stay at Faslane! (P.S. That's SECRET, so don't tell anyone!!)

I agree it's sad our famous Shipbuilding past is being forgotten.Our local authority doesn't seem interested in our local history.
Another example is that there is absolutely nothing to show Hebburn and Jarrow had coal mines.
Not even a plaque showing where they were.
The Davy Lamp that saved thousands of lives in coal mines all over the world where coal was mined was invented because a local Vicar pleaded with Sir Humphrey Davy to produce a safe lamp that would not cause killer explosions which he did and tested it here in Hebburn.
Maybe our new REFORM Councillors will do something about these 2 examples. Fingers crossed

My local town of Irvine is host to part of the Scottish Maritime Museum (the other location is in Dumbarton)
And it's fantastic! Although Irvine wasn't a major ship-building centre, it was a major harbour for many years.
The museum is fantastic, with everything from ships, boats of all sizes, engines & everything to do with ships.
But it isn't Council run (although I'm sure they help) it is a Charitable Trust, set up in the 1990's, to preserve, and display the maritime history.
Pop onto Google, to see what can be done, by determined individuals!
Maybe something similar can be done on Tyneside?

As much as the areas industrial heritage needs celebrated I think that Reform's first job is to sort out the council at its "delivery"level, stabilise finances so as to protect Council Tax payers and if Illegals have already been placed in the location put a moratorium on housing them and put the long term residents first on the list including ex armed forces people.
Then after that is sorted some thought could be given to Heritage and its cost which will be borne by Council Tax payers.
