Albert Street

An old postcard photo dated (posted) 22th August 1917 showing Albert Street, Hebburn. The imposing building on the left is the co-op building which to members of a certain age was better known as Jessie's and where many a happy Saturday night was spent dancing. The Albert pub is up on the right hand side.

The Gem opened in May 1912 Mac, so will be there but just out of sight.
That's Smiths Printers on the corner of Albert St- Lyon St. The tall Co-op building hosted Dances up stairs for years in what everyone called 'The Store Hall'.
In later years when the Powerhouse was closing Jessie Ives who held popular dances there had to look for another place, so she started them off again in the Store Hall.

Had my first date with my later wife in The Gem, sadly no longer with us !
