One of those horses was my sister Marian's.

I took this photo when the Gilhespy family ran Monkton Mill Farm. They'd had a fruit & Veg shop in Hebburn Quay area. Today the 'Cockcrow Inn' & Carpark is on this land.

I left St. Josephs school in 1990, and thats how I remember that area, when we had to run the 'Cokies' in PE lessons with Mr. Felton and Mr. Woodcock. Apart from the pollution, its a shame that the Cokeworks had to close down with the loss of so many jobs. I would rather those surrounding fields were still fields as well rather than housing estates.

A lot of pupils from local schools will remember this water filled quarry. Great view of the long gone Coke Works isn't it?

Thanks Norman. Another good photo. I remember walking around those areas when starting St. Josephs in 1985.

Both of those photos look a lot cleaner than I recall, from the early 1960's.

But what a daft situation: !930's they build the "coke ovens" as we knew them, to help solve the massive unemployment in the area (hence the Jarrow March)
Then we build houses right next to the coke ovens, and then complain about the smell, etc.
So they shut down the coke ovens, creating more unemployment.

You just couldn't make it up !!!!!
