Old TV !

Posted by Stan Wears on 23/8/2026, 12:30 pm

can you remember some of the old Tv programmes? I can recall Dixon of Dock Green with Jack Warner, Hey Jeannie with Jeannie Carson, Saturday Night Out with Raymond Baxter ( who also did the Farnborough air show), Whats My Line with Eammon Andrews and his panel of grumpy Gilbert Harding, Bernard Braden and Barbara Kelly, Quiz shows like Dotto with Jimmy Hanley, Spot the Tune with Jacky Reay and Marion Ryan. Better Tv in those days, so please add more to list ...

Before we emigrated to the USA in 1958, our neighbors, the year before, were the first on our street to have a TV. On a Saturday night, they would invite the local kids over to watch the Six-Five Special. Bill Haley and His Comets "Rock Around the Clock" will always be remembered by me.

Like you say Stan TV in a bygone age was much better than the standard of today’s TV, I have been watching old episodes of Minder which now comes with a daft warning about content.

We were the only people in our street with a TV so I always came home from school with other kids to watch whatever was on the TV.

Remember Z Cars and The Sweeny fantastic cop series, there were lots of programmes that meant something, in the past Panarama was an extremely good programme before the Beeb went all woke.

In the early 1960’s late Saturday evening, I loved That was the week that was. Usually missed the first 30 minutes getting home from Newcastle. Loved it, great group, of journalists et al.

I liked Dixon of Dock Green and I remember my mother liking Peyton Place. Norman Vaughn was doing Saturday Night at the London Palladium when I first watched it. I recall Michael Miles and a quiz opening boxes, would look very weird now

I remember going round to a neighbors (the Gatenby Family in Alfred St. - I am sure Jim Gemmel will remember the name) - to watch the Coronation - a 12inch tv with a magnifying glass on !
I cannot get away with the bad language they use in all the plays etc. which are now on - it's language Icertainly don't use as I am sure most users of the board don't

You will find a fair few on places like talking pictures and YouTube. There was some great programmes but there was some awful ones too. They're the ones we forget.
