Joseph, Clegwell School had the Griffin as its Badge, please read below as it will give you information about the use of a Griffin, maybe this is how Griffin Court gets its name, hope this helps.

The Connection to Local History

In traditional British school heraldry, schools frequently incorporated design elements from the coats of arms of local gentry, benefactors, or historic landowners.

• The Ellison Crest: In classical heraldry, various branches of the Ellison family utilized a griffin's head (or a griffin segreant) as their definitive crest or symbol within their coat of arms.

• Local Influence: The Ellison family built and owned Hebburn Hall and heavily influenced the development of the area. When Clegwell Secondary Modern School opened in the 1930s, the school honored this deep-rooted civic history by weaving the Ellison family’s heraldic griffin into its school identity and uniform badges.

If you are looking into the history of Hebburn or Clegwell School, let me know if you would like to explore other local family crests or the transition of Clegwell into Hebburn Comprehensive School.

Liz was correct about Griffin as a name.

As I said in a previous post everything around our area seems to have to have a LINK to the old 'Lords of the Manor' the Ellisons.👎👎👎👎
That family did very well out of our Towns and even today, people are paying Ground Rent to them.
Now we have to suffer a Mythical creature called a Griffin as the name of a Property Development because it was their emblem.
Not a real name like 'Reyrolle', 'Clothier', 'Leslie','Palmer' just a silly myth from the days when people didnt get educated and they believed in fairy stories. 😞😞😞😞

Is Griffin Court social housing. I wonder if people will be offered a place to move from Durham Court.

Thank you Liz, it seems it’s special housing for vulnerable people, privately owned, but guaranteed rent as it seems mostly will need financial help from various benefits. It seems lots of builders are building these places, it’s where the money is to be made.

If you were working could you afford it?
