With the exception of a tiny handful of genuine altruists, the absolute priority of the professional political class in America is re-election. Campaigns are expensive. Those expensive campaigns are, overwhelmingly, financed mostly by very deep-pocketed individuals and corporate entities, rendering politicians beholden to them. The US has been a de facto oligarchy for many decades.
