What ‘foxhole syndrome’, never had it.
GOG, Strange in war, artillery bombardment, mortar fire, rocket fire, as well as under rifle fire in attempted ambush, I never experienced this alleged foxhole syndrome you talk about. I did watch a chaplain lose his faith, however. Now that was a sad sight, for it ruined what he could do for those he was supposed to help spiritually. Now, not everyone went through that. On the whole, I question what effect war had on anyone's belief, or lack of belief. Personally, it made no effect on my lack of belief. I started rather certain that I would likely get killed. I got over that fear quickly enough without the need of belief in a deity. And I have no belief that I was brave then, nor now. Nor have my several serious illnesses has caused any need for a deity. Now, if others need a belief in some sort of deity, I have no problem with that.
