You are correct. A stable Universe is impossible no matter how you figure.

I suppose that Einstein figured that there MUST be a hidden force that made stability possible. His Cosmological Constant might have been one attempt to do this. Remember that neither the strong nor weak nuclear force was known to him at that time.
