Young, strong, healthy people were at HIGHEST RISK, while children and elderly were partially exempt. 1918 flu killed by overstimulating the immune response system. Those with the strongest immune responses were preferentially killed.
That which constitutes "STRENGTH" depends on the particular situation and pathogen.
