Many sports already have a variety of other separate categories.

Each sport generally has a separate governing body that makes it's own rules and categories.

In swimming, there are separate age groups. Usually they have: 8 & under, 9 & 10, 11 & 12, 13 & 14, 15 & over.

Special Olympics: "for children and adults with intellectual disabilities"

Paralympics for athletes with a range of physical disabilities

Sports could make a new transgender category if they want to.
